Most sneaker care content is about restoration — deep cleans, sole whitening, before-and-after photos. That is a project, and projects get postponed until the shoe is beyond saving.

Maintenance is a different activity. It takes about ten minutes a week and mostly prevents the situations that require a project.

The weekly ten minutes

Brush off dry dirt. A soft brush over the upper and a stiffer one around the sole. Dry dirt brushes off in seconds; the same dirt after it has been wetted and dried repeatedly is ground in.

Wipe the midsole. A damp cloth along the foam or rubber. This is the part that shows dirt first and cleans most easily, so it produces the biggest visible improvement per unit of effort.

Check the laces. Grey laces make a clean shoe look dirty. Laces are cheap and washable, and replacing them is the highest-impact thing you can do to a tired-looking pair.

Let them dry properly. If they got wet, stuff them loosely with paper and leave them somewhere with air movement. Not on a radiator and not in direct sun.

That is the whole routine. It works because dirt that is removed before it sets never becomes a stain.

Cleaning by material

When something needs more than a brush, the method depends on what the upper is made of, and using the wrong one causes real damage.

Leather. Mild soap and water on a soft cloth. Wipe, do not soak. Dry away from heat. Condition occasionally if the leather looks dry — leather that dries out cracks, and cracks are permanent.

Suede and nubuck. No water as a first resort. Use a suede brush to lift the nap and a suede eraser for marks. Water leaves rings on suede, so if it does get soaked, wet the whole panel evenly rather than spot-treating, and brush the nap back up once dry.

Canvas. The most tolerant material. Soap, water, a brush, and some scrubbing. Canvas can take a full wash, though repeated soaking weakens the glue holding the sole on. Canvas is cotton, so everything that applies to washing cotton garments applies here too, including how it behaves with heat.

Knit and mesh. Gentle. A soft brush and mild soap. Aggressive scrubbing pulls the knit and creates fuzzing that does not go away.

Rubber and foam midsoles. These take the most abuse and tolerate the most. A magic eraser works well on scuffs. For yellowed foam, the honest answer is that oxidation is a chemical change in the material, and while various treatments are sold to reverse it, results vary and some methods damage the foam or the upper.

The washing machine question

People do put sneakers in washing machines, and it sometimes works. It is worth being clear about what you are risking.

Machine washing exposes the shoe to prolonged soaking, sustained agitation, and — if you use a warm cycle — heat. Adhesives soften. Foam absorbs water and takes days to dry fully. Leather can stiffen and crack as it dries. The impacts of the drum against the shoe can distort the shape.

If you are going to do it anyway: cold water, gentle cycle, shoes in a mesh bag, laces and insoles removed and washed separately, and air dry completely afterward. Never a dryer. Accept that you have shortened the shoe's life somewhat in exchange for convenience.

For canvas shoes this is a reasonable trade. For leather or anything structured, it is not.

Creasing

Toe box creasing is the thing people ask about most, and the honest answer is that it is unavoidable. The shoe bends there every step. Any material that bends repeatedly creases.

What you can influence is how deep and how permanent:

  • Correct fit. A shoe that is too long creases further back and more sharply, because the foot bends in a different place than the shoe was designed to.
  • Shoe trees or stuffing. Keeping the shape while the shoe is not being worn prevents the crease from setting deeper. This matters most for leather.
  • Rotation. A shoe that dries fully before its next wear creases less, because damp leather deforms more readily and holds the deformation.

Crease protectors — inserts that sit in the toe box — do reduce creasing. They also change how the shoe fits and feels, and plenty of people find that trade not worth making. It depends how much the creasing bothers you.

Odor

Odor is bacterial, and bacteria need moisture. Everything that reduces moisture reduces odor.

  1. Rotate pairs so each dries completely. This is the single most effective measure.
  2. Remove the insoles between wears to let both surfaces dry.
  3. Wear socks, which absorb moisture that would otherwise go into the lining.
  4. Wash the insoles separately when they get bad. They hold most of it.
  5. Cedar inserts or a baking soda pouch absorb residual moisture between wears.

Spraying a scented product into a damp shoe covers the smell and does nothing about the cause, which is why it stops working after a day. Rotation is the actual fix, and it is the reason to own three pairs rather than one good one.

Storage

Between-season storage is where avoidable damage happens.

  • Clean them before storing. Dirt left on leather for months etches into it, and organic matter attracts pests.
  • Do not store them in a sealed plastic box. Trapped moisture is how mold starts.
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight, which fades uppers and accelerates foam yellowing.
  • Maintain the shape with trees or loose paper.
  • Somewhere cool and dry. Attics and garages swing through temperature and humidity ranges that break down adhesives and foam. The same environmental rules apply to storing knitwear between seasons.

One thing worth accepting: polyurethane midsoles degrade with age whether they are worn or not, through gradual breakdown of the material. A pair stored unworn for many years can fall apart on first wear. Shoes are made to be used, and storing them indefinitely does not preserve them the way it might a durable good.

Protecting them before they need cleaning

The cheapest maintenance is the kind that stops dirt reaching the shoe.

Protector sprays create a barrier that makes water bead and stops dirt bonding to the fibers. They work genuinely well on suede and canvas, which are the materials that stain most readily. Apply to clean, dry shoes, in thin coats, and reapply every few weeks with regular wear. A spray applied over existing dirt seals the dirt in.

Match the product to the material. Silicone-based sprays can affect breathability and are not appropriate for all leathers. Products sold specifically for suede are formulated not to flatten the nap.

Test on a hidden area first. Some sprays darken light materials slightly. The inside of the heel is a good place to find out.

The other half of prevention is simply not wearing the wrong pair. A rotation only works if you actually reach for the rugged pair when the weather is bad, which is the point of owning one.

What is worth repairing

Not everything is.

Worth it: sole separation, if the upper is sound — a cobbler can re-cement it cheaply. Replacing insoles. Replacing laces. Recoloring scuffed leather.

Sometimes worth it: a full resole, on well-made shoes with replaceable soles. Most sneakers are not built for this.

Not worth it: compressed midsole foam. It cannot be restored, and once the cushioning is gone the shoe is done as a daily wearer even if it looks fine.

Knowing which failures are terminal is useful when deciding how much to spend in the first place, and it is why the everyday pair in a rotation is where the money should go — it is the one that will die of midsole compression rather than of anything you could have prevented.

The same principle runs through garment care generally: small, frequent, low-effort maintenance beats occasional intervention, and most clothing fails from handling rather than from wear.
